Osteopathic Visceral Manipulation (OVM)
OVM is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that harmonizes tension between the organs (viscera) and the musculoskeletal (MSK) system. The musculoskeletal system represents the bones of the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and joints. It has been shown in research that disturbances in the visceral system can increase musculoskeletal tension leading to discomfort if persistent. This discomfort may present in the neck, mid back or low back.
Disturbances in the viscera can also manifest as two phenomena known as ‘referred pain’ and ‘visceral-somatic pain’. This refers to discomfort in the body (MSK) coming from the organ itself. An example of this is mid-back pain being caused by irritation in the stomach.
By addressing the ‘inner’ tensions within the body (in relation to the organs and the surrounding connective tissues) using OVM, the Manual Osteopath is able to harmonize the imbalances in the human body from the ‘inside out’. Normalizing these imbalances can be the key in solving discomfort and pain patterns in the body, where other therapies have not been successful.
Research has also shown that OVM has positive effects outside of the musculoskeletal system. This includes, digestive disorders (bloating, constipation, nausea, acid reflux, GERD, swallow dysfunctions), urogenital issues (pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids and cysts, bladder incontinence, effects of menopause), pediatric issues (constipation, gastritis, colic), neurological dysfunctions (headaches, migraines, anxiety, depression, PTSD, concussions) and post-operative scar tissue.
If you struggle with any of the above-mentioned symptoms we recommend trying out OVM.
Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST)
Cranial sacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment, which aims to normalize tension in the connective tissue that surrounds the brain and cranial nerves. This is achieved by subtle, hands-on osteopathic-techniques that ease pressures, densities, and movement restrictions in the bones, connective tissues and sutures of the cranium and face. When tensions are balanced in the cranium, over stimulated areas of the brain and cranial can return to a neutral balanced state and the bodies inherent healing mechanisms can flourish. The result is a balanced ‘neurological state’, which means better brain function and less neurological discomfort.
CST is highly regarded as a go-to therapy for anxiety, headaches, migraines, concussions, depression, insomnia, TMJ dysfunction, sinus issues, vertigo, Autism, motor-coordination impairments, chronic fatigue, ADD/ADHD, PTSD, stress and tension related disorders, chronic neck and back pain, fibromyalgia, and more
CST is a gentle technique. It is also common for patients to fall asleep during the treatment due to the calming effects CST has on the nervous system!
