Our daily lives can often be filled with stress—and not just emotional stress. Sitting at a computer to finish a project, carrying heavy bags and backpacks are daily activities that over time place tremendous physical stress on the neck and spine.
Consider this fact: sitting increases spinal stress by 35% compared to standing and 50% compared to lying down. Now think about the lives that we lead: sitting for too many hours in a car commuting, working at a computer, watching TV, or playing video games. Picking up heavy objects incorrectly. Wearing high-heeled or platform shoes. Carrying heavy backpacks. Not exercising regularly. Smoking. They all affect our posture.
Emotional and physical stressors amplify each other: A nagging headache makes us irritable; a tough day at work leaves our bodies feeling tense and uncomfortable. An accumulation of stress can deteriorate our spinal alignment and posture, which we feel in our bodies as back and neck pain, headaches, and fatigue. Additionally, GRAVITY pulls on our body daily and constantly.
Our clinic specializes in posture restoration and spinal rehabilitation utilizing the Pettibon System. The Pettibon System™ is a proven spine and posture correction methodology that, along with providing pain relief, restores normal spinal form and function. You play an integral role in this correction by personally strengthening the weak areas that initially allowed your condition to develop. We offer a complete rehabilitation program that works toward ensuring permanent correction. We utilize a combination of specialized manual therapy techniques combined with unique programs of active rehabilitation. Each person has a custom designed care plan addressing his or her unique issues.
Our focus in the clinical application of the Pettibon System™ is to provide patients with the tools you need to strengthen and correct yourself. This permits us to achieve great changes in the body’s global posture, disc height and health, and reduction of nerve irritation in a relatively short period of time.
Pettibon System™ is an extensively researched, viable alternative to many other therapies. Through meticulous evaluation and comparison to researched biomechanical norms, a global postural and spinal strengthening care plan is tailor-made for each patient, and is designed to restore, as closely as possible, your optimal spinal form and function. This ensures a decrease in related pain and symptoms, as well as a greater ability to prevent spine, disc and nerve related issues. Our goal is achieved when you need to see us as little as possible.
We strive to restore you to your highest potential in the shortest period of time for the least cost. Our goal is to fix your problem and to teach you how to maintain the corrections on your own so you will not have to depend on frequent visits.
Poor posture is a sign of abnormal spinal curves, alignment and weakness that has a direct affect on your nervous system. and musculoskeletal functions. Abnormal spinal curves and alignment often leads to injury, accelerated degenerative joint disease (arthritis), pain, poor immune function, diminished hearing and sight, depression and may more conditions.
Traditional manual therapy is effective for acute neck and lower back pain. However, their success in long term correction for chronic and recurrent neck pain and lower back pain is limited. This is because the underlying problem is usually due to chronic postural issue. Until the normal spinal curves are restored, the symptoms will keep re-occurring.
There are normal curves in the spine when viewing from a side view, however, the spine should be straight from the front/back view. The normal spinal curves (the natural curve in the neck and lower back) are important in supporting and distributing the body weight properly throughout the spine. The curves in the spine provide stability, strength and mobility to the global function of the spine.
Loss of Curves = Loss of Functions
Two kinds of muscle fibers make up the musculoskeletal system. One is fast-twitch muscle fiber. The other is slow-twitch muscle fiber. Muscles have both types of fibers but usually one fiber type dominates a muscle group. Our postural muscles have mostly slow-twitch fiber.
When phasic muscles fatigue and/or when they're injured they go flaccid and collapse. Postural muscles react very differently from phasic muscles when they're injured or fatigued: they spasm. And the way postural muscles spasm is rarely even, either side-to-side or front-to-back. That's why poor posture distorts our appearance because our spine is no longer aligned.
Traditional and conventional rehab exercises, which involve performing resistance exercises through a range of motion (i.e.weights, machines, Therabands), works only the fast twitch muscles. The fast twitch muscles will make you strong, but they will not change the structure or remove the underlying cause of the spinal problem. They will help you carry your groceries better, while your spinal structure continues to degenerate and your body becomes sick. The spinal muscles that support the spinal curves and determine your posture and health are slow-twitch postural muscles. These muscles require isometric exercise to strengthen and restore postural health. Isometric exercises, which involve pushing against a force that moves very slowly or doesn't move at all, help eliminate postural muscle spasms as well as rehabilitate their balance, strength, and endurance.
