Sauna is a great way to boost metabolism and gently detoxify your body. How does the Far Infrared Sauna work?
Far infra red rays or FIR are completely safe and beneficial to the human body. They are so safe that doctors use them in hospitals to warm newborn babies. FIR are naturally occurring and are the beneficial portion of sunlight that we can receive. Infrared heaters in the sauna operate the same way as natural sunlight but without the harmful side effects of solar radiation.

How long is each sauna session?
Normally, a sauna session is schedule for 45 minutes.
What do I wear?
Ideally, you wear as little clothing as possible so the light rays produced by the sauna can pass deep to the skin, However, as with all treatments at our centre the client is always in control so you can decide to wear what ever amount of clothes you feel comfortable wearing.
Daily saunas generate the best affect over a period of time. However, 1-2 sessions per week may be more practical for most people and produces great results.
Before trying the sauna a brief consultation is required with one of our doctors to ensure that it is appropriate for that client to use the sauna.
If you have been diagnosed with, or suspect any of the following disorders, infrared sauna therapy may not be appropriate for you:
Infrared saunas differ from traditional saunas because they operate at a temperature of 90-145 F compared to a traditional sauna that operates at 185-230 F. This allows you to be able to breathe comfortably and enjoy the benefits for extended periods of time. In addition, you can also control and turn down the temperature from inside the sauna.

"The skin is a major organ of detoxification and we release toxins through it when we sweat. Sweating can be induced by aerobic exercise or by saunas. Many cultures worldwide have used saunas or sweat lodges as regular tools for body cleansing and purification. Saunas have been used in Finland for over 1,000 years. The Romans, Greeks, Turks, Russians, and Japanese have their own variations on the sauna. Native Americans have utilized the sweat lodge as a healing and purification rite for equally as long. The Finns believed that the steam that rises from the stones of the sauna could drive diseases and evil humors out of the body and purify the mind and spirit. The sauna was viewed as the ‘holy place’ and sauna bathing was considered the ‘medicine of the poor’. Historically, the Finnish family enjoys a group sauna together once weekly, usually on Saturday. Often a bride and bridegroom will take a sauna together before their marriage ceremony. Sick people are taken to the sauna to heal, and many women give birth in the sauna. Old men and women are carried there to die. The Finns maximize detoxification while in the sauna by beating their skin with a birch branch whisk, increasing the circulation to the skin. There is a sauna for every five people in Finland today and 90% of the population over 80 years of age still takes a sauna regularly. The sauna occupies a primary place in Finnish culture." "I will never forget the feeling of elation I experienced after rushing over to the University of Toronto library one evening with a burning question in my mind. Were breast cancer rates lower in Finland than in surrounding Scandinavian countries? An hour later, I believed that they were and was thrilled about the possible benefits of saunas in preventing breast cancer. Finland had the lowest breast cancer rates of the Scandinavian countries, according to figures from 1979. The incidence was 39.9 per 100,000 women in Finland compared to Denmark’s high incidence of 59.4. The incidence in the other Scandinavian countries was approximately as follows: Sweden, 54.9; Iceland, 54.2; and Norway, 47.4. We need further studies that monitor women who take regular saunas to assess their breast cancer risk in comparison to women who don’t take saunas.
We have all been exposed to environmental chemicals that increase breast cancer risk. As I was researching the environmental links to breast cancer, I became overwhelmed with the numbers of toxic chemicals that we are exposed to daily, the ease with which we pass those on to our children, and the difficulty with which we eliminate them from our bodies. It seemed to me that the environmental load was greater than our detoxification abilities and that we were destined for extinction within a few generations. Studies have shown that chemicals often linked with increased breast cancer risk are DDE and PCBs; with a fourfold increase in risk in women who have elevated serum levels of DDE and a doubling of risk when PCBs are higher than in normal controls.
In recent years, the sauna has become recognized as one of the few methods to remove toxic chemicals from the body, particularly when they are stored in the fat cells. L. Ron Hubbard, father of the Scientology movement, pioneered its use for people with drug dependencies in 1977. He describes his method and its evolution in his book Clear Body, Clear Mind. After his success, clinical ecologists began to use sauna therapy with individuals who have chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue, environmental illness or who have been subjected to toxic chemical exposures. Substances that have been shown to be excreted through the skin during saunas are morphine, methadone, amphetamines, chlorinated pesticides, herbicides, and PCBs.
A Vietnam War veteran who had been exposed to Agent Orange (dioxin) was placed on a 37-day protocol using exercise, vitamin and mineral supplements, and saunas. By the end of the treatments, a fat biopsy showed a 97% decrease in levels of PCBs and DDE. Firemen exposed to PCBs from a transformer fire suffered memory impairment for stories, images, and numbers, attributed to the exposure. After undergoing a medically supervised diet, exercise, and sauna program, their mental function improved. In his book Diet for a Poisoned Planet, David Steinman describes his experiences with sauna detoxification and outlines a home detoxification program that reduced his blood levels of DDT by 70%. One clinic in Los Angeles called HealthMed has been able to remove over 90% of toxic chemicals from thousands of peoples’ bodies through an exercise, sauna and supplement program based on Hubbard’s work. A case report by Dr Krop, a clinical ecologist in Toronto, describes a similar successful protocol used for one woman with overexposure to solvents.
I believe that it is essential that saunas become a regular part of our lifestyles if we are to protect ourselves and our children from breast cancer and other diseases related to chemical toxicity. These include hormonal imbalances, neurological ailments such as ADD, infertility, autoimmune and other immune-related diseases, environmental illness, and chronic fatigue syndrome, to name just a few. Many environmental chemicals are lipophilic, meaning they are attracted to fat, and so we store them in our fat cells. The skin accesses these fat stores through sweating. Better out through our sweat than into our children’s mouths through breast milk. With the regular use of saunas, we can eliminate a good proportion of environmental toxins and hence reduce our risk of breast cancer. If you were to analyze blood, saliva, or fat samples before and after a sauna detoxification program to see how successful you had been at eliminating them, you might consider testing for the following chemicals: DDE; PCBs 105, 118, and 156; the pesticides, atrazine, endosulfan, methoxychlor and lindane; and bisphenol-A." The Infrared Sauna is the first service I used at Complete Balance Health Centre. I set out on a life-long goal to be healthy, loose weight & obtain overall wellness, inside & out. (I have now lost 45 pounds after changing many different aspects of my lifestyle, including consistently utilizing the Infrared Sauna).
After doing some of my own research on the benefits of Infrared Saunas, I learned just how great it is for ridding your body of toxins which are hard to get rid of if you don't really sweat on a consistent basis (which we normally don't excessively). The Infrared Sauna is also better for your body than a conventional sauna & I have found it to be a major difference in the tolerance in the heat from the Infrared to conventional.
